Emergencies Can Happen Anytime, Anywhere

Emergencies don't come with a warning but being prepared can make all the difference. Making sure everyone in your household is ready is the best way you can protect your whānau should an emergency happen.

Here are 3 easy steps you can take to get prepared:

1. Grab Bags

It’s important you have supplies in case you have to stay home, or in case you can’t return home for a couple of days. You probably have most of the things you need already. You don’t have to have them all in one place, but you might have to find them in a hurry and/or in the dark.

  • Your grab bags should include:
  • Warm clothing
  • Walking shoes
  • Raincoat and hat
  • Water, snack food, baby formula, and/or pet supplies
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Portable phone charger
  • Cash, copies of important documents, and identification
  • Medications
  • First aid kit with face masks
  • Torch, radio, and extra batteries
  • Don’t forget a grab bag for your pets!

2. Household Emergency Plan

Your whānau needs a clear plan of action during an emergency. Having a plan helps make actual emergency situations less stressful. Think about the things you need every day and work out what you would do if you didn't have them.

Sit down together, discuss the plan, and practice it. Make sure everyone knows their role and what to do to stay safe.

3. Stay Informed

It’s important you stay informed during an emergency. Your local radio station will keep you up-to-date with the latest news. If the power goes out, a solar, battery-powered, or car radio is essential.
