The Manawatū District Council (MDC) is required to adopt a Signifigance and Engagement Policy under the Local Government Act 2002.
While MDC has always had a policy, the policy was due for review in March 2020. It was decided at that time by Elected Members that the policy required more than a routine update as parts of the policy were outdated.
The policy has now been reviewed and updated. You can find the full policy under the Documents heading, or a summary of changes can be found below. After reading through, we would love to know how you engage with MDC and what you think of the policy overall.
Summary of the Proposed Changes
- A new section on community participation, outlining practical ways residents can engage with Council.
- A more detailed approach to assessing the significance of proposals.
- A tiered framework for engagement methods, based on the level of significance.
- A revised list of strategic assets, including Te Āhuru Mōwai (Community Hub).
- Clearer principles for engagement, including a strong commitment to inclusion, transparency, and Māori participation.
