Manawatū District Council is committed to keeping our roads safe and meeting Government requirements.
The Government has updated the rules for how speed limits must be set. The Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits (2024) now requires councils to install Variable Speed Limits outside schools (where they don’t already exist) by 30 June 2026 and seek community feedback on the parts of the district where changes to Permanent Speed Limits are proposed.
Community Consultation
Because these school speed limits are mandatory, we are:
- Letting you know about the upcoming school-related speed limit changes, and
-
Asking for your feedback on changes to Permanent Speed Limits in places where:
- The main speed limit needs to change to allow for the new school speed limits, or
- New housing or business activity has changed how people use the roads
Feedback received will be used to inform MDC's final proposal, which will be submitted to the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi for legal certification.
